How Much Does Respite Care Cost Per Day, Week, and Month?

Respite care in San Diego costs $32 to $45 per hour, the same as standard home care. A typical 4-hour respite visit costs $130 to $170. Overnight respite (10 hours) runs $360 to $420. Weekend respite of 48 hours costs $1,500 to $2,200 with rotating caregivers. A full week of 24-hour respite costs $5,000 to $8,500. Monthly costs vary based on schedule: weekly 6-hour respite visits run $800 to $1,000 per month, while regular overnight respite once per week costs $1,400 to $1,700 monthly. Long-term care insurance, VA Aid and Attendance, and California's IHSS program help offset costs for many families. How Is Respite Care Priced?

Respite care is priced by the hour, by the day, or by a flat weekly rate, depending on the schedule.

Hourly respite is the standard model for visits of less than 24 hours. The hourly rate matches the standard home care rate in San Diego: $32 to $45 per hour based on the level of care needed.

Daily respite for periods of 24 hours or longer is sometimes priced as a flat daily rate, similar to live-in or 24-hour care pricing. Live-in respite (one caregiver covering 24 hours with a sleep break) runs $480 to $550 per day. 24-hour shift respite (two caregivers covering shifts) runs $600 to $700 per day.

Weekly flat rates exist for extended respite stays, typically 5 to 14 days. The weekly rate is usually equivalent to 7 daily rates without a discount, since extended respite requires the same staffing as continuous 24-hour care.

There are no separate respite rates or premium surcharges at United Home Care. Respite is priced the same as standard care.

How Much Does Hourly Respite Cost?

Hourly respite varies based on the level of care and the time of day.

Companion-level respite (client is mostly independent, needs companionship and meal prep): $32 to $36 per hour. A 4-hour visit costs $130 to $145. A 6-hour visit costs $195 to $215. An 8-hour visit costs $260 to $290.

Personal care respite (client needs help with bathing, dressing, transfers): $34 to $40 per hour. A 4-hour visit costs $135 to $160. A 6-hour visit costs $205 to $240. An 8-hour visit costs $270 to $320.

Dementia-specific respite (client has cognitive impairment requiring trained caregivers): $38 to $45 per hour. A 4-hour visit costs $150 to $180. A 6-hour visit costs $230 to $270. An 8-hour visit costs $305 to $360.

There is a 4-hour minimum per visit. This is standard across California home care because shifts shorter than 4 hours create scheduling and pay issues for caregivers. Within the 4-hour minimum, schedules are flexible.

How Much Does Overnight Respite Cost?

Overnight respite typically runs 8 to 12 hours and is priced hourly at standard rates.

A standard 10-hour overnight respite (9 PM to 7 AM, for example) costs:

Companion level: $320 to $360 per night.

Personal care level: $340 to $400 per night.

Dementia level: $380 to $450 per night.

Overnight respite is one of the most common requests we receive. Family caregivers who are losing sleep to nighttime wandering, toileting needs, or medication management benefit enormously from regular overnight respite, often once or twice per week.

A weekly overnight respite at the personal care level costs roughly $1,440 to $1,700 per month. For most family caregivers, the cost is justified by the dramatic improvement in their own sleep, mental health, and capacity to continue providing daytime care.

How Much Does Weekend Respite Cost?

Weekend respite covers Friday evening through Sunday evening, or any 48 to 72 hour weekend block.

48-hour weekend respite with rotating caregivers (two caregivers each covering 12-hour shifts): $1,500 to $1,800 at standard rates, $1,800 to $2,200 at dementia rates.

48-hour weekend respite with one live-in caregiver (where the home supports it and the client sleeps through the night): $960 to $1,100 at standard rates.

72-hour holiday weekend respite (Friday evening through Monday evening): $2,250 to $2,700 at standard shift rates, $1,440 to $1,650 at live-in rates.

Weekend respite is common for family caregivers who need to attend events, travel, or simply have a full reset. It also works well for adult children who are visiting from out of town and want to give the primary caregiver a real break.

How Much Does Extended Respite Cost?

Extended respite covers a week or longer, often used when the family caregiver is recovering from surgery, traveling internationally, or otherwise unavailable for a longer period.

Weekly extended respite at 24-hour shift care levels: $4,200 to $4,900 per week ($600 to $700 per day).

Weekly extended respite at live-in care levels: $3,360 to $3,850 per week ($480 to $550 per day).

Two-week extended respite: $8,400 to $9,800 at shift rates, $6,720 to $7,700 at live-in rates.

Three-week extended respite: $12,600 to $14,700 at shift rates, $10,080 to $11,550 at live-in rates.

Extended respite usually requires more planning than shorter arrangements, because the family caregiver's typical responsibilities have to be fully transferred. United Home Care care coordinators help families develop a written care plan for extended respite that covers daily routines, medications, contacts, and emergency procedures.

How Can Families Pay for Respite Care?

Three primary funding sources help offset respite costs.

Long-term care insurance policies almost always include respite benefits if the client meets the policy's benefit triggers. Daily benefit caps range from $100 to $300 per day depending on the policy. A typical LTC policy could cover a substantial portion of an overnight respite or a full weekly respite arrangement.

VA Aid and Attendance pays a monthly benefit to wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need assistance with daily activities. The 2026 maximum approaches $2,400 monthly for married veterans, which can fully fund regular respite care for many families.

Public programs include California's IHSS, which provides a respite component for Medi-Cal eligible families. The Older Americans Act funds respite vouchers through local Area Agencies on Aging, including the San Diego County Aging & Independence Services. Southern Caregiver Resource Center offers respite grants for qualifying San Diego County family caregivers.

Some employers offer dependent care flexible spending accounts (DCFSAs) that can be used for respite care. The annual contribution limit is set by federal law and changes periodically. Check with your HR department.

Private pay covers any uncovered portion of respite costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is respite care more expensive than regular home care?
No. Respite is priced the same as standard home care at United Home Care. Respite is a use case (giving family caregivers a break) rather than a separate service line with separate pricing.

Q2. Can I book respite for just one weekend?
Yes. Single-event respite (one weekend, a few days for a wedding, a family emergency) is common. There is no minimum commitment beyond the 4-hour per-visit minimum.

Q3. Do you offer respite for clients with dementia?
Yes. Dementia respite is one of our most common service requests. It is delivered by caregivers trained in dementia-specific care, behavioral redirection, and safety supervision. The same caregiver returns each visit, which matters even more for dementia respite than for other types.

Q4. Will long-term care insurance reimburse for respite care?
In most cases, yes. Most LTC policies include respite as a covered benefit once the client meets the policy's benefit triggers (typically needing help with two or more activities of daily living, or having significant cognitive impairment). United Home Care helps families verify coverage and bill carriers directly where possible.

Q5. How fast can respite care start?
Most respite arrangements can start within 24 to 72 hours of the initial call, assuming caregiver availability for the requested schedule. Emergency same-day respite is sometimes possible. Planned extended respite (weekly or longer) usually benefits from 1 to 2 weeks of lead time to arrange the right caregiver match.

Q6. Will the respite caregiver be the same person each time?
Yes. United Home Care assigns a primary respite caregiver to each client, with one or two identified backup caregivers for that primary's days off. The same caregiver returns each visit, which is especially important for clients with cognitive impairment.
